“The Sage is occupied with the unspoken and acts without effort. Teaching without verbosity, producing without possessing, creating without regard to result, claiming nothing, the Sage has nothing to lose.” – Tao Tê Ching
When you boil it all down, we as humans desire the same three things no matter who we are, where we are, where we’re coming from or where we’re going. The first thing we desire is FREEDOM. The freedom to follow our heart’s desires, to define our own dreams, to pursue our self-set goals. No one likes to be micromanaged or to live life according to others’ demands or expectations.
Our second desire is FULFILLMENT – to know that we matter and that what we do makes a difference. Most of the common workplace grumbles are about the uselessness of tasks, meetings, and procedures that have nothing to do with reaching a desired outcome (the meeting to decide when the next meeting will be!)
Our third desire is to have FUN. We thrive when we’re in the flow of life and have freedom and fulfillment without struggle or conflicts or forcing things to happen. It comes from realizing that there is no competition that threatens your success and everything that comes to you is designed to serve you in some way.
If you find that you’re in a stressed-out state, the easiest way to regain your composure is to go back to the very basics. All of our sensory organs are at the front of our body – what we hear, see, taste, smell, feel and perceive provide a constant influx of information. How we process all of this depends on the belief that we have and the story we are telling ourselves about it. Instead of adding to the mind chatter and forcefully try to change your experience or your story, do this instead.
In the womb, our spine is the first thing to develop. Our back is silent, strong and supportive. Lean back into your body – fall back into that support, silence and strength instead of charging forward into conflicts. Imagine that all of your ancestors, indeed all humans who have come before you, are behind you with their guidance and insights as your guardian angels. Allow all tension to soften.
Imagine your inner being or higher self being seated on a pile of cushions at the back of your brain, seeing beyond the current confusion and chaos and into the wealth of resolutions, answers and solutions that have now come into that space you created by leaning back.
From this higher perspective, you can emotionally detach from whatever is stressing you. You can look at the entire situation as if you were looking down on your life and watching it as a play or movie. Notice that you are just one of the actors and you have no need to explain or defend the role that you are playing.
Let your higher self soothe you, the actor, by asking some simple questions:
Are you feeling a lack of freedom? Do you feel micro-managed or are you rebelling because you’re not getting your own way or have no voice in the matter? If you back off a bit from the resistance you are feeling, you can reclaim your freedom by realizing that you always have a choice as to how to feel. No one can make you feel inferior without your permission. Back away from reaction and get into pro-action to do what you can for yourself to ease the stress. No matter how small or insignificant that change may be, it will help you realign with your inner being and use all obstacles and problems as springboards to new solutions.
Do you feel a lack of fulfillment? Take a step back to appreciate your part in the entire endeavor. Praise yourself for your contributions rather than relying on others to notice you. Changing your self-talk will change your perspective and ultimately change how others treat you. If your passion and talents are not expressed in what you do for a living, appreciate your job for providing funds and realize your job does not define who you are. Then find an outlet that expresses what you love to do. You can have both financial stability and fulfillment of what you desire to do from two totally unrelated sources.
Are you feeling more struggle than fun in your life? We often have our focus on what is wrong rather then what is right and that makes it impossible for positive momentum to build. Instead of saying “I like this but I don’t like that”, only give attention to what you like. Life is like a buffet and you get to choose what you put in your plate. When you spend a day filling your plate with what pleases you and ignoring what doesn’t, you begin to experience the ease and flow as life brings to you more of what you desire. You are magnetic – It’s all about attraction.
Realize that by leaning back and letting go, your intuition will guide you to the path of freedom, fulfillment and fun that is for the highest good for all concerned – including you!
