Music for your life: When it is tough to believe in love

Trust life a little bit

Trust life a little bit

In continuing our series Music for Your Life, today I have a sweet song for you. It is called First Day of My Life and is by Bright Eyes. What makes this song so sweet, in my mind, isn’t necessarily the words, though they’re sweet too. What is so wonderful about this song is the combination of a sweet, simple melody with a beautiful video. The video shows all different kinds of love: romantic love, familial love, parental love, wistful love, lost love, love that seems brand new, love that seems not so new… it just fills my heart with hope for the many prospects for love in the world – maybe even love that isn’t quite what we expected.

Please take a look at and listen to the video First Day of My Life by Bright Eyes and lyrics below:

This is the first day of my life
I swear I was born right in the doorway
I went out in the rain suddenly everything changed
They’re spreading blankets on the beach

Yours is the first face that I saw
I think I was blind before I met you
Now I don’t know where I am
I don’t know where I’ve been
But I know where I want to go

And so I thought I’d let you know
That these things take forever
I especially am slow
But I realize that I need you
And I wondered if I could come home

Remember the time you drove all night
Just to meet me in the morning
And I thought it was strange you said everything changed
You felt as if you’d just woke up
And you said “this is the first day of my life
I’m glad I didn’t die before I met you
But now I don’t care I could go anywhere with you
And I’d probably be happy”

So if you want to be with me
With these things there’s no telling
We just have to wait and see
But I’d rather be working for a paycheck
Than waiting to win the lottery
Besides maybe this time is different
I mean I really think you like me

Did you find a kind of love you could identify with? Did you find a kind of love that filled your heart with warmth, even though it wasn’t your love? Did you find peace in the simple melody? Did you find peace in the unassuming words? Did you find beauty in love? Did you find a little hope, a little desire to try and love the world?

See with love, there is indeed no telling, we just have to wait and see. You never know when the next first day of your life will be. And you never know quite what will happen once that next first day of your life comes along – it may work, it may not, it may be forever, it may be beautiful just for a time. But the hope is there. And the love is worth it. There are so many people I’m so glad I didn’t die before I met, and I can’t wait to meet some more. And, at least for me, I think that’s what this song is really about – giving life a chance to help you find love in the world.

I think the best way to tie these thoughts together is with words from a Life Skills Resource Group favorite, Maya Angelou: “For those who have given up on love, I say, ‘Trust life a little bit.’

Go believe in love today – in all kinds of love and in the beauty that love can bring to your life.
