Couples Counseling

You are here: Home / Services / Couples Counseling

We help people in relationships with couples counseling by listening first and then helping you both develop life skills to improve communication that leads to a happier, healthier life together.

At Life Skills Resource Group we believe that committed relationships and raising children are two of the more important things in life. Our personal life experiences have shown us what is real. Close relationships can be very difficult, challenging, and often painful roads to navigate. Our goal is to offer you a journey into relationship intimacy that honors each individual and never causes anyone to lose sight of themselves.

Couples seek counseling for wide range of reasons, but here is a list of warning signs that your relationship may be in trouble:

  • Feeling distant from your partner
  • Increase in arguments
  • Repeated arguments over the same issues
  • One or both partners have mentioned divorce
  • Lack of affection or no physical intimacy
  •  Lack of interest in relationship
  •  Avoiding spending time with each other
  •  Poor communication, “he/she doesn’t listen”
  •  Inadequate support
  • Infidelity – either physical or emotional
  • Disagreements over how to raise children
  • Couples counseling can also be helpful at times of transition, including:
  • Premarital or pre-live-in to set up a successful partnership
  • Blending a family
  • Adjustment after divorce

All of our counselors welcome couples of all types, including:

  • Dating
  • Co-habiting
  • Engaged
  • Married
  • Separated
  • Heterosexual
  • Homosexual
  • Lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT)

Our couples therapy is intended to help you find solutions to the problems you are dealing with in your relationship. Together we will work to develop an understanding of how to create emotional connection in your relationship that you will carry with you and apply throughout your lifetime, allowing you to face life’s challenges shoulder to shoulder as a team.

Life Skills Resource Group has 2 highly trained Orlando couples therapists. Cindy Fabico, MA is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, and a Life Coach, and Risa Bos, MA is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor.

Cindy’s primary approach is based on Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFCT) created by Dr. Susan Johnson, author of the New York Times best-selling books “Hold Me Tight” and “Love Sense.” Cindy recommends that clients who wish to work with her consider reading at least one of these best selling books.  Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy is the only empirically researched and tested couples therapy to show a recovery rate (less conflict and increased connection) of 70-75% after 10-20 sessions.  Cindy has over 100 hours of training in EFCT and continues to meet monthly with a group of Orlando Emotionally Focused CouplesTherapists in an effort to continually improve her skills.

Risa is trained in and works primarily with the Gottman Method of CouplesTherapy which was created by marriage researchers John and Julie Gottman. Drs. Gottman have an excellent New York Times best-selling book called “The 7 Principles for Making Marriage Work” that both Cindy and Risa often recommend. Gottman Couples Therapy helps couples to increase respect, affection, and closeness, break through and resolve conflict when they feel stuck, generate greater understanding between partners, and keep conflict discussions calm.

Cindy and Risa will look more deeply at the “dialogues” that occur between partners.  We will explore how these are related to issues of disconnection in the basic emotional attachment that is essential for safety in a love relationship.  An example of this would be developing an understanding of what is really happening when one of you pushes and prods, and the other shuts down and gives up.  This is not easy work and involves digging into feelings that we are often unaware we have been carrying under the surface for years.  But it is worthwhile work, as it will result in the relationship we all long for; one in which we instinctively know the other is there for us, deeply understands us and truly values us for exactly who we are.

Cindy and Risa are also certified PREPARE/ENRICH Facilitators. The PREPARE/ENRICH Assessment is an online survey that you take with your partner to help you identify the unique strengths and potential growth areas of your premarital or married relationship. Cindy and Risa can then work with you by highlighting your relationship strengths and providing concrete tools to address the potential growth areas.
